African American Marbleization: Hair Conditioning Cement. Marble Dust. Porcelain. 24”x24”x 48” As a child my mom would grease my scalp then put my hair in a protective style . It was our Sunday night ritual. It was a time to just sit and talk together. Around 12 I started doing my own hair. It was a movement from protection to liberation. Yvonne Shortt is an American social practice installation artist. Her work encompasses illustration, installation, sculpture, and photography. Shortt's work has been shown in museums and public parks throughout New York City, and deals with various themes, including equality, disability, community, and race.
